From Mechanical Engineering to Orienteering

David Lin, founder of KanPas, began working in compass design and manufacturing in 2002. With a background in mechanical engineering and a personal interest in long-distance running and hiking, he developed a strong appreciation for dependable navigation equipment.

In 2014, David discovered orienteering, a sport that combines map reading, route planning, physical endurance, and quick decisions. The demands of competitive orienteering highlighted the importance of compass needle response, stability in motion, and a design that supports efficient navigation.

This experience helped shape the direction of KanPas: developing professional-grade orienteering compasses that combine performance-focused engineering with practical usability and accessible value.

Developed Through Athlete Feedback and Engineering

KanPas approaches compass development by connecting engineering with real-world user needs. Working with experienced orienteers and outdoor users, the team focused on the details that matter during navigation, including needle settling behavior, capsule liquid stability, baseplate ergonomics, and bubble control.
